The International ¼-inch table model
This calculator uses the retained USDA Forest Service SOLVE footage table for the International ¼-inch rule. The quarter-inch name refers to the kerf allowance embodied by the rule. Lookup requires whole-inch small-end diameter inside bark from 8 through 26 and a listed length of 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16 feet.
Gross, deduction and net estimates are separate. Unsupported dimensions are rejected rather than interpolated, extrapolated or rounded into a table cell.
Worked International cell
A 16-inch diameter, 16-foot log has a retained International ¼-inch table estimate of 180 BF. With a 10% deduction, 18 BF is shown separately and the net is 162 BF. For comparison, the retained Doyle cell for the same dimensions is 144 BF; the difference reflects model assumptions.
What the estimate excludes
The result cannot see taper beyond the selected diameter, sweep, defects, species behaviour, saw pattern, mill kerf, slab recovery or operator choices. It models potential board-foot recovery under the named rule and does not measure geometric log volume or guarantee finished saleable lumber.
Measurement and record checks
Measure and record the small end inside bark under the governing practice. Confirm the length class rather than typing overall physical length from memory. Keep the source table identifier and any deduction rationale with the result, and avoid combining this number with a Doyle or Scribner total without labels.
