The released Doyle table model
The Doyle calculator looks up retained USDA Forest Service SOLVE footage-table values by small-end diameter inside bark and log length. It does not interpolate between cells. Supported diameters are whole inches from 8 to 26; supported lengths are 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 feet.
The gross table estimate is displayed first. An optional 0–100% deduction is calculated separately and subtracted to produce the net estimate. The output names the rule and diameter convention so the number is not detached from its model.
Worked Doyle cell
For a 16-inch small-end diameter and 16-foot length, the retained Doyle cell is 144 BF. A 10% deduction is 14.4 BF, leaving 129.6 BF. The deduction does not change the source-table value; both gross and net remain visible.
Known behaviour and limitations
Doyle values are comparatively low for many small-diameter logs because of the rule’s historical assumptions. A table estimate cannot account for actual taper, sweep, crook, rot, sawing pattern, kerf, mill equipment or operator decisions. It is not guaranteed recovered lumber and is not structural or appraisal advice.
Checks before recording a Doyle estimate
Confirm diameter was measured inside bark at the small end and that length matches a supported table column. Do not round an unsupported diameter into range without the controlling measurement rule. Retain the edition/table provenance from Sources and corrections and state why any deduction was applied.
