Board Feet vs Cubic Feet
Compare two volume units and convert between them exactly.
Both units measure solid volume
A cubic foot contains 1,728 cubic inches. A board foot contains 144 cubic inches. Dividing gives exactly 12 board feet per cubic foot. Unlike comparisons with linear or square feet, no extra dimension is required because both sides already represent volume.
The conversion is geometric. A stack occupying one cubic foot externally may contain less than 12 BF of wood if air gaps or stickers are included, while irregular slabs require an agreed measurement method.
Worked inventory example
An inventory total of 480 BF equals 40 ft³. If it is arranged on pallets occupying 55 ft³ of gross space, the extra 15 ft³ is packaging and void space, not additional lumber volume. State which figure a storage or freight plan uses.
Which unit to report
Board feet is convenient for sawn lumber tallies and per-BF prices. Cubic feet can help with general volume, storage or comparisons to other materials. Converting the unit does not change the measurement basis, grade or dimensions that produced the original volume.
Rounding and reversibility
Divide BF by 12 or multiply cubic feet by 12. Preserve the unrounded result if it will be converted back or used in pricing. A round-trip discrepancy usually indicates that a displayed value was rounded too early.
