Convert between two volume units
Board feet and cubic feet both measure volume, so their relationship is fixed: divide board feet by 12 to obtain cubic feet, or multiply cubic feet by 12 to obtain board feet. The factor follows from 1,728 cubic inches in a cubic foot divided by 144 cubic inches in a board foot.
This conversion says nothing about board count, dimensions, grade or recoverable yield. A 24 BF stack is 2 ft³ whether it consists of many narrow boards or a few large timbers.
Worked warehouse example
A tally of 237.6 BF occupies 19.8 ft³ in geometric board-foot volume: 237.6 ÷ 12. Converting 19.8 ft³ back gives 237.6 BF. Packaging voids, stickers between boards and irregular edges can make the external stack dimensions larger than this calculated wood volume.
When cubic feet is useful
Cubic feet can help compare lumber volume with storage, freight or other bulk quantities, provided the comparison distinguishes solid wood from gross package space. Board feet remains more familiar for many lumber transactions because it connects directly to thickness, width and length.
Precision checks
The factor 12 is exact within these unit definitions. Keep the unrounded value when feeding a price or inventory calculation. If a result differs by a factor of twelve, check whether the source was already cubic feet or whether a board-foot quantity was incorrectly treated as square feet.
